And then…

Okay, the video in my last post was put together with Final Cut Pro X.

Obviously there was nothing complex about that project, it was more about getting a handle on how FCPX works. I could have done it in iMovie - it was just a minute of quick cuts loosely timed to the song Someone’s Singing New York New York by Australian band Ghostwriters.

The only thing that bothers me about it was that I used someone else’s music to create it.

So I’ve decided that next time I post a project, if I can’t actually create the audio myself, it won’t have any audio…

Which brings me to my next project.

I’m going to create a mock product ident in Apple Motion 5, loosely inspired by those used by European car makers.

Should be fun - I’ve never actually used Motion before.

2012: On the skilling-up

So why was my last post an image rendered from Blender, 5 years ago?

Simple - it represents the last time I managed to carry through a creative project from start to finish.

Sad, I know.

The main reason I seldom finish any of the ‘little’ projects I start is because most of them aren’t so little. Lofty ambitions combined with a lack of organisation and an *ahem* immature skill set have proven a toxic combination for me.

Well no more! In 2012, I’m a little more realistic about a) the scope of the projects I undertake, b) making better use of the time available to me, and c) recognising where my skills are just not up to scratch.

On the skills front, in no particular order, these are the areas I want to gain proficiency in:

  • Video Editing
  • Motion Graphics design
  • 3D Modelling and Texturing
  • Objective-C Development

In terms of the tools I’ll be using, in very specific order:

  • Final Cut Pro X
  • Motion
  • Houdini
  • Xcode

The first project I’m undertaking should be relatively easy - I have to edit down a 1 minute teaser video of my recent trip to New York City, where I married my fiancé Jodi (hereafter known as My Sun And My Stars).

An awesome way to ease into FCPX, no?

Happy New Year, Internets

2 posts in as many months.

Lame.

Alright, so my first New Year’s Rez is to update this blog-thing a lot more frequently.

There’s so much shit I want to learn this year, it’s not like I won’t have anything to post about.

And I guess that’s kind of the point of this site for me - to track my progress as I skill-up in a few key areas of tech that I’m really interested in.

At the same time, maybe someone else out there will find something I post here useful or entertaining. How awesome would that be?

Anyway, I’ve got a lunch date - I’ll post something more interesting (and less vague) soon.

Promise.
